The first time I faced the Chernobyl disaster in its entirety was at the end of June. I was sent on a business trip to the city of Kiev. And I look and see that… well, we knew it already, I think, `cause our ruling party and our Secretary General Gorbachyov had told us, that a disaster had happened and that there were victims. And I saw that Kiev and its people had suffered a lot. First of all, what struck me was that the summer had just began, but all the trees had lost the leaves – were totally defoliated. I was staying at the hotel “Dnepr” by that time. […] We watched from our floor – and all the time there were motorboats rushing up and down the Dnepr, I guess there were those water cannons on the motorboats with special pumps, I think – they were washing the embankments. That's the memory that sticks in my mind, and I think it was very dangerous there. But I couldn’t imagine then I would end up in the very hell – at the 3rd power plant…
